To complete An Unheard Farewell, find the scouts’ cave off the lift near The Climb, defeat the soldier inside, read the orders, then return to the Adjutant Sous-Officier. Both dialogue choices award the Sleight of Hand Amber. The lift must be freed at its upper landing before you can reach the hidden ledge.
Start at the officer’s carriage
Speak to the man calling from the carriage near Demolished Path in Valley of Ashes and agree to look for his missing scouts. Follow the main route down the broken bridge, passing through the carriage where you obtain the Pistol, until you reach The Climb Lantern and lift.
Unlock the upper lift landing
- Shoot the glowing growth blocking the lift and ride it as far as it currently allows.
- Leave through the accessible cave route, burning the yellow barrier with fire.
- Continue through the caves and climb the outside route to the top of the shaft.
- Shoot both glowing growths blocking the upper landing, then use the lever to call the lift.
The quest cave is not the first passage used to climb the shaft. Freeing the lift at the top lets you reach a second entrance partway down.
Reach the scouts’ cave and read the orders
Ride downward and watch for a narrow ledge about halfway along the shaft. Jump onto it, then burn the yellow growth closing the cave entrance. Inside is a stronger soldier: defeat him before searching the rear of the cave. Read the orders beside the camp furniture to update the quest.
If the journal still asks about the remaining scouts, inspect the opposite cave route reached from the lift shaft and climb its ladder. The soldiers caught in the large growth there provide the other clue.
Continue along the main path and unlock the ladder shortcut back toward the officer’s carriage. Return to him once the journal has registered the investigation.
Choose a response and collect the reward
Telling the truth and lying both give Sleight of Hand, which reduces firearm reload time and speeds weapon switching. Your choice changes the follow-up. After telling the truth, rest and return to the carriage for an additional Catalyst reward. After lying, resting and revisiting the scouts’ cave leads to Remnant’s Return.
The Amber is therefore not restricted to a particular response. Choose the dialogue outcome you prefer, and check the relevant follow-up location after resting.
