Valor Mortis In the Name of Art

Quick Answer

Enter the painter's house, move the painting, and collect the Basement Key at the hillside grave. Follow the basement clues to the final note; the October 21 fix requires returning to the location.

Enter the painter’s house in the Vale of Wrath, move the upstairs painting, and collect the Basement Key near the grave on the hillside. Then investigate the basement and read the final note beside the woman’s body. Completing the quest rewards Butcher’s Carnage; its Flask restriction applies when you equip the Amber, not simply when you receive it.

If the quest would not start on an older save, the developer’s October 21 update addresses a start-blocking issue. Install the applicable update and return to the quest location: the fix does not automatically add or complete the quest in your journal.

Open the painter’s house

Start from the Under the Bridge Lantern and follow the forest path toward the isolated house. Its entrance is obstructed by corruption.

Circle the outside until you find a window with a clear view of a glowing weak point inside. Watch for the Howler near the house before stopping to aim. Shoot the weak point with your Pistol to clear the entrance, then go through the front door.

Different guide descriptions call this the left or right side of the house. Use the window and visible weak point as the landmarks rather than assuming a direction from an unspecified starting position.

Move the painting and find the Basement Key

Go upstairs to the painter’s body and interact with the painting on the easel nearby. Moving it reveals a view toward the hillside grave and begins the investigation.

There is another glowing weak point associated with the uphill route. Shoot it to clear the way, leave the house, and follow the path up beside it. At the grave, investigate the memory and collect the Basement Key.

The Basement Key pickup by the grave above the house

The key is outside on the hillside. Remaining upstairs and searching the painter’s immediate surroundings will not reveal the basement entrance’s key.

Investigate the basement

Return to the house and unlock the basement door on the lower floor. The route continues through rooms containing Spewers and Carrions.

  1. Clear the enemies that can attack you while you investigate. Shooting the wall-mounted Spewers before approaching is a practical way to reduce their pressure.
  2. Burn the obstructing webs with Fire Transmutation and continue through the basement passages.
  3. Read the investigation notes and interact with the blue memory near the poison-making equipment. Let that sequence finish so the next door opens.
  4. Continue through the newly accessible passage to the woman’s body. Read the final statement lying nearby to complete the quest.

Finding the Basement Key alone does not finish the investigation. The final note is the completion interaction, so follow the basement route past the memory instead of leaving as soon as the door is unlocked.

Butcher’s Carnage changes how you heal

The quest reward is Butcher’s Carnage Amber. While equipped, it restores health through melee attacks but prevents healing with Ferrofluid Flasks.

If you want to…What the reward means
Finish the investigation and collect the AmberRead the final note beside the body. You do not have to equip the reward to complete the quest.
Use melee attacks to recover healthEquip Butcher’s Carnage and accept the accompanying loss of Flask healing.
Keep your existing Flask-based playstyleCollect the reward without treating it as a mandatory equipment change.

This is a different healing approach, not an unconditional upgrade. Consider whether you can safely keep attacking during difficult encounters before building around it.

A quest that will not start on an older save

The official October 21 patch announcement lists a fix for an issue that could prevent In the Name of Art from starting. Its quest-fix instructions require returning to the relevant location; your journal will not update by itself.

Return to the painter’s house and repeat the normal starting interaction with the painting after updating. An older guide’s report of a blocked basement memory is not proof that every problem with a particular save has the same cause. If the route still fails, compare the exact blocked interaction with the developer’s support advice rather than assuming that restarting the game is a guaranteed fix.
